Cow, ox, yak
The yak or ox is the Chinese zodiac animal for babies born in 2020! This pattern is a PDF, written in English for intermediate knitters knitting flat on two needles.
The yak is fairly simple, with only one color change on the nose and horns (that will naturally curve if the seam at the tip is sewn tightly). It’s “mane” is really just a tuft of hair at the top of the head that works well using the fringe stitch. The tail also looks most natural in fringe stitch.
You need to have…
• Yarn in desired color(s) and weight (~3oz/50g for sport weight; ~12oz/350g for worsted)
• Dark contrast yarn for eyes and nose
• Knitting needles at least 2 sizes smaller than those recommended for the yarn being used
• Stuffing
• Tapestry needle
You need to know (or learn)…
• Stockinette stitch
• Increase and decrease stitches
• Mattress stitch for sewing seams
• Fringe stitch for tuft of hair on head and tail
• Basic color change techniques (optional)
