Updated November 18: I’ve added instructions for a child’s size (approx. 20” head circumference; 5-year-old child).

The Cozy Coneflower Hat looks more complicated than it is -- it’s easy enough for an advanced beginner. My first test knitter described it as “easy, rhythmic, and colorful.”

I designed this hat when I was knitting hats for those in need in our cold winter climate. I really enjoyed working with all three yarns -- they feel soft and knit up nicely. For my donated hats, my yarn choice was based on availability, price, and ease of care, but you could use any knitting worsted or aran weight yarn that gives the proper gauge.

The basic adult hat with pompom takes approximately 100 yards of the main color and 60 yards of contrast color, so could easily be knit from yarn leftover from other projects.

I’ve included several variations on my basic design and encourage you to play around with color and try different combinations of pattern and plain sections.
