Beyond the very tip of mainland Cornwall, only to be seen from Lands End on a clear day, lies the remote Isles of Scilly. This cluster of islands has played a significant role in Britain’s nautical history. Semi-tropical plants grow next to the white, sandy beaches with waters that are as clear as glass. These Isles know the perils of harsh winter storms and has countless shipwrecks scattered around their coastline.

Crab pots line the small tracks and roads leading down to the harbour on the main island; they are gnarled and battered by the cold Cornish sea. These same pots are dragged in and out of the boats by the brave and hardy fisherfolk who wear their woollen Ganseys to ward off the worst of the weather and keep them warm and dry.

The broken diamonds and triangles in this pattern replicate the design of the crab pots. The ridge and farrowed garter stitch signifies the amazing agriculture and semi tropical plants that can grow on these islands. The variegated knits and purls on the top of the hat is a texture widely seen in historical Gansey jumpers, evocative of Cornwall. This hat would not be out of place on the head of weathered Scillonian fisherfolk.
