The gloves are part of a set (the other part being a hat) inspired by the National Trust gardens at Cragside in Northumberland. The gardens include an area with the splendid name Temperate Ferneries, where ferns grow among specially placed boulders. The gloves carry a lace fern pattern and are lightweight and suited to temperate climes. They are worked in the round, from cuff towards the fingers and feature a gusseted thumb. Ribbed panels at the sides help to ensure a snug fit.

The pdf version of the pattern includes both chart-based and written instructions for both half-fingered and full-fingered versions of the gloves.

The magazine version of the pattern carries instructions only for the half-fingered gloves, and uses chart-based instructions.
