Most of you might know the famous stone circles in Scotland and Ireland. But those who know the stories of Diana Gabaldon – also known as Outlander, will recognize the title even better. In the story of Outlander, this stone circle is called Craigh na Dun, and it is a gateway for time traveling. I love the stories so much, and the stones in this formation are a bit pointy and differently shaped than other historical places of stone. The pointed shapes made me think of creating a textured pattern that refers to this and gives that natural highland feeling. I created a lovely shawl with a perfectly symmetric shape.

General information about the pattern:

Yarn requirements: The shawl is made with Scheepjes Stonewashed. This yarn, which consists of 78% cotton and 22% acrylic, is available in balls of 50 grams and has a length of 130 meters.

The shawl is made with two colors in the following color numbers and amounts:

Color A: 814 Crystal Quartz ( 6 balls needed / 780 meters)
Color B: 802 Smokey Quartz (1 ball needed / 110 meters)

However, I also tasked my tester with making a version out of a Scheepjes Whirl cake. This is a gradient type of yarn in cakes of 215-225 grams of yarn with a length of 1000 meters. She used the color 751 Liquorice.

Hook size needed: As we want a nice drape, I advise a full-size hook size that is more significant for the chosen yarn. I used a 4.5mm crochet hook for this shawl; for the Whirl version, a 3.5mm hook was used.

Size: The shawl will measure 190cm / 76 inches on the longest side and 40 cm / 16 inches in height.

You can adjust the shawl size easily by adding or removing repeat sections. Once you crochet the pattern, you will recognize the increasing and decreasing repeats, making this an option to adjust.

The outcome of the Whirl version was the same, although you had to make some extra repeats in the pattern to use up the yarn and get to this size.

The pattern contains clear, written instructions, sometimes guided by photos. A chart is also made for this pattern. There are no videos available for this pattern.

After purchase, you can download a PDF file in all available languages, including Dutch and English (US). Take note! There is an extra PDF file with this pattern for the Whirl version, which contains some extra repeats. Don’t forget to download this file as well. The pattern will guide you on when and how to use it.
