The pattern is of medium difficulty due to the number of cables and the variety of structural patterns. If you want the shawl to be long enough to cover your shoulders, I recommend using Aran weight wool - at least DK weight.

Shawl is inspired by the series Outlander, which is a TV adaptation of a series of books by author Diane Gabaldon (“Outlander”).

This pattern is not an exact reflection of the clothes that can be seen there, but only my imagination and free interpretation of how such a shawl should look to reflect the mood and atmosphere of those places.

The main motif of the braid in the middle is a typical Celtic pattern, which is also supposed to symbolize the intertwining of the fates of the two main characters and the times in which they both live. The side braids resemble the links of the chain that Jamie was chained with when he was captured by Captain Randal in the first part of the book and the series.
