This stunning cowl features a beautiful 10 row lace pattern. The natural bias created by the lace pattern suggests the crest of a wave, hence the design’s name. I first found the pattern in a 1970s Golden Hands magazine called Italian Lace.

The cowl uses my new yarn Fenella - a 2 ply weight yarn - knitted on a 4.5mm needle to create a soft, open fabric. The shorter version takes 3 skeins, the longer takes 6, however the pattern can be used to create cowls of many different lengths.

It is knitted from side to side using a provisional crochet cast-on and the cast-on and cast-off edges are then joined using three needle bind off or grafting after twisting the scarf length. The lace pattern is worked on all rows but is particularly easy to follow and is a great pattern for a beginner lace knitter wanting to move to the next level.

Standard yarn tension
30-36 sts & 36-42 rows = 10cm (4in) using 2.75mm-3mm needles over stocking stitch.
