This is a pattern to crochet your own Crinkle Crankle blanket which is covered in a zig zag design. You can download the pattern in PDF form immediately after payment. You will not receive a finished item, you make it yourself using my pattern.

Crinkle Crankle walls are an unusual type of wall built in a serpentine shape. The alternating curves is a way of making very thin walls - only one brick wide - that are also very strong. The technique was known to the Egyptians but today they are mainly found in Suffolk in the UK. When I was looking for a name for this crochet pattern, I googled “Zig Zag” and discovered Crinkle Crankle walls; I’m planning a trip to go see some for real!

After payment you will have access to two files, one is written in UK terminology and the second is written in US terminology. It is 20 pages long and in full colour with photo tutorials comprising 39 instructional photographs walking you through everything. The pattern is written in English.

I used Stylecraft’s Batik yarn in solid colours and Stylecrafts Elements Swirl to make this afghan but any Double Knitting/Light Worsted (8 Ply) yarn may be substituted. To make the blanket shown a total of approx 900g / 2500m is required (excluding border).

Make it using only two colo(u)rs or use all the colours of the rainbow … the choice is yours! Each band of zig zags uses a little over 20g (55m) in the size I have made mine so you may even be able to use up all the partial balls of yarn that you have in your stash left over from other projects.

Overlay mosaic technique is used throughout the body of the blanket. Two colours are alternated, one colour per row. A full explanation of how to work overlay mosaic crochet stitches is contained within the pattern but visual learners may wish to familiarise themselves with these two stitches in advance of purchase by viewing them on one of the many videos available on YouTube.

The pattern also includes a detailed tutorial on how to make the double border shown on the blanket. The border tidies up all the yarn tails left over at the end of the work so there are only five ends to sew in even though I’ve used so many colours!

A chart is provided (with ‘x’s) for experienced crocheters but you do not have to read charts to make this blanket, every row is written out in full as well.

A typical hook to use is 3.5mm (E/4). Depending on yarn thickness, you may have to adjust hook size to achieve the same gauge as mine.
