Crochet Dreadlocks Hat
Going on a winter skiing vacation and looking for something different to wear?
This is a fun hat for any age, especially junior high through college.
This pattern is a combination of written instructions and photo tutorial. It is classified in the EASY category for the crochet hat itself, and for the dreadlocks ponytail in the INTERMEDIATE category only because the steps are uncommon and not part of crocheting. You can make the hat in 1 day or 2 evenings.
Yarn requirements:
(A) Approx. 100 yds. of thinner yarn for size H hook.
(B) Approx. 55 - 60 yds. of super bulky/roving yarn for size 13-19 knitting needles.
General Process:
This hat is crochet on the inside with yarn A except for the turn-up (yarn B), and then the dreadlocks (yarn B) are threaded through and tied into a pony tail on the outside.
The outer yarn (yarn B) should be a thick and thin changing yarn that would be knitted on size 13 – 19 knitting needles, generally referred to as super bulky, and/ or roving yarn. You can use all of the same yarn, or mix variegated and solids for a striped effect.
You will need knowledge of:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
slst - slip stitch
There are many videos on YouTube.com for demonstrations of these stitches.
