Crossover Collar Aran-AG
Project Description
This Crossover Collar Aran sweater for American Girl dolls is a beautiful design inspired by an Eddie Bauer sweater. One charming feature of this sweater is its distinct collar, set into a square neckline, crossing over at the chest. Instead of a typical 4 stitch cable, this has a six-stitch braided cable up and over the shoulders.
This design also looks lovely for a turtleneck sweater, so I have given additional instructions to create a turtleneck instead of the crossover-collar version.
To create the sweater, the body is knit first. The collar stitches are picked up and knitted afterwards, then stitched at the front neck. The set-in sleeves are knitted separately and sewn in. The sweater is finished with a back ribbing and snaps or a zipper. It is fully open in the back for ease of dressing. You will find the charts for the sweater & sleeves at the end of the pattern.
Materials
• Lightweight fingering yarn--1-2 50 gram balls. You may be able to complete it with 1, but have a second ball so you don’t get anxious!
I suggest yarn from KnitPicks (www.knitpicks.com). The yarn I use for many projects is “Palette”, an inexpensive wool yarn available in a rainbow of colors. For a softer yarn in an identical weight, I often choose “Stroll”—which has a more limited range of colors available. A 50 gram ball of either Stroll or Palette has 231 yards, and the scale is 7-8 sts = 1” on #1 - 3 needles.
• Knitting needles sizes 0, 1 & 2
Good needles will make your job so much easier. I used Addi Turbo circular needles in the 24” length. I had two of them so I could leave stitches on one while I worked on the sleeves.
• 6 sets of snaps for closure with needle & matching thread OR an 8 inch separating zipper
Gauge
Gauge—in stockinette stitch with size 1 needles, my gauge is 17-18 stitches and 23 rows in a 2 x 2 inch square (5.1 cm).
