Crown of Hot Diamonds Hat
Designed by Lora McLaughlin

This hat is cozy warm using #4 weight yarn. The front post and back post double crochet throughout the body of the hat makes a thick textured fabric. I would say this pattern is for an intermediate crocheter as the color changing is a bit tricky, but certainly a beginner might want to challenge themselves..very doable! The quick change of color mid-stitch is explained within the pattern. And, of course, you can use different color combos for a very attractive-on-anyone hat/beanie (with pompom or no pompom..your choice).

Stitches used:
sc (single crochet)
sc-blo (single crochet back loop only)
fpdc (front post double crochet)
bpdc (back post double crochet)
2 fpdc-tog (2 front post double crochet togeter=decrease)
2 bpdc-tog (2 back post double crochet together=decrease)

Gauge: H hook: 14 stitches, 14 rows in sc = 4” (10cm)

Materials:

  • H hook or whatever hook meets gauge (I crochet loosely so if you crochet tightly you may want to go up a hook size or to make a bit larger hat or down a hook size for smaller.)
  • Yarn 2 colors any light or medium weight #4, A & B (grey & red) or your combo choice. This hat takes approximately 200-300 yards (or less). I like combining different brands/types of yarn, sometimes it makes for very interesting results. I used a combination of caron one pound scarlet and loops & threads impeccable true grey for one hat, and studio classic by nicole red with Caron Simple soft white on the other.
