Cuarenta Shawl
This shawl was designed by Kris and Oz with the Fino Custom Color “Cuarenta” (which means 40 in Spanish) dyed by Manos del Uruguay specifically for our shop The Ball & Skein & More to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the store. This shawl is an interplay of a variegated color worked in a simple stockinette stitch combined with 5 semi-solid colors using a different stitch pattern for each color. The design can be your own by choosing your own color combinations!
We used the color Cuarenta for the Main Color and the Fino Miniskein pack Clarissa (FM3) for the contrasting colors.
As you can see, the main color is knit in stockinette and the other 5 colors each have their own stitch pattern. Yes, it’s a triangle shawl that starts by casting on 5 stitches, but the fun happens as you’re applying different stitches to each section of the piece!
This pattern is worked in increments of 16 rows. The variegated color is worked in a stockinette stitch, and each textured section is done in a different color. The shawl can be done in any combination of colors or all one color.
In each Sections 1 through 11 the stitch count increases by 32 stitches. Section 12 stitch count increases by 16.
You’ll use a lot of the main color and most of Color E. Color A, being the shortest element, you’ll use the least, but you knew that. We were generous in our yarn requirements, because we know how frustrating it can be to run out of yarn.
The shawl comes out to approximately 58” wide, 29” high. A nice size that sits well on most of us.
In the pattern are explanations of the abbreviations we used as well as some tips and techniques that will help you feel confident in making the piece.
Also, it’s a shawl, don’t stress about gauge, just make sure you like the fabric you’re creating.
This was a fun and challenging piece to design. We can’t tell you how many stitch patterns we looked at and tested in order to come up with this combination. We liked the way it came out, and think you’ll enjoy knitting it. We can’t wait to see yours!
