Cucullus
Hoods are timeless. People already wore them thousands of years ago. The Romans called this garment “cucullus”, and it spread all over Europe: “gugel” in Medieval German, “cochall” in Irish, “coule” in Middle English, from which we get the modern English word “cowl”.
Some of us probably remember – either affectionately or with a nostalgic grudge – trotting to school in winter, wrapped in weirdly fitting hood scarves. They did keep us warm though, didn’t they?
This is the ancient hood updated for the 21st century – or the 24th century or wherever you want to travel!
Clean lines and a pop of colour make this a versatile fashion accessory. Subtle shaping and a nifty drawstring provide a snug and comfortable fit.
Sizing:
The instructions are written for two sizes: a smaller one for 8-10 year old children and a larger one for adult women. The pattern includes advice for custom sizing.
The adult size uses exactly 2 skeins of the original yarn, one for the outer fabric and one for the lining and contrast edges.
Yarn:
The original hood was knit with grossewolle Classic Wool Merino 300 (300 m / 330 yds per 100g) and a handspun Falkland wool with similar properties.
The pattern is suitable for sport and DK weight yarns. You can either use the same yarn for the outer fabric and the lining, or combine a more rustic yarn for the outer fabric with a softer one for the lining.
Needles:
Use the needle size that gives you the required gauge, most likely 3.25 - 4 mm / US 3 – 6.
The hood is partly worked in the round and partly flat. It is best to use medium length circular needles (80 - 100 cm / 32 – 40’’).
Two needles that are one or two sizes smaller than the main needle are also required.
Other tools and supplies:
You will also need two stitch markers, a darning needle, and a few metres/yards of embroidery thread or thin yarn (matching colour not necessary because it will be invisible).
The drawstring for the hood can either be bought or knitted as an i-cord.
