This cowl was born of this winter, 2015, the worst one I can remember. We have had worse storms, but never so much snow, day after day, combined with frigid temperatures. And I have puffy hair, so hats are OUT for me. So, I designed a cowl that I could fold under and have it be a nice 7 inch height, but when opened up to its 10 inch height, would cover my nose and ears and keep me warm in the woods walking my dogs. The cowl in photo is a tip of the hat to Maine: lobsters, pine trees and blueberry bushes!

Color is my signature in knitting and this cowl adds lots of color to the grey and white landscape I see everywhere this winter. The finished product is toasty and avoids the dreaded hat head. What’s not to like? The photos show a combination of 3 of the available 18 graphs.

Knit in heavy worsted weight on smaller than normal needles for extra warmth, any worsted or even DK weight yarn can be used but please don’t mix weights or it will look wonky when done. Two motifs and 3 bands of corrugated rib will make a 7 inch height, three motifs and 4 bands of corrugated rib will give a 10 inch height. Eight lengths are given, but if making longer than the first 2 lengths, the 7 inch height will work best. The yarn amounts provided are for the 10 inch height in each length, but be mindful of the total amount of yarn needed to complete each size. If doing the whole cowl in black, white, and grey instead of all the various possible colors then larger amounts of each of these three colors will be needed than a cowl with 11 different colors. Smallest size takes about 300 yds, largest about 620 yds.
