Cully's Cabled Yoke Sweater
From Schoolhouse Press:
This yoke sweater had it’s origin in Cully’s hat design, which first appeared in Vogue Knitting. He asked, ‘Why not cable in 2 colors?’ Why not indeed - the effect is striking! The seamless sweater construction follows EPS: knit the body and sleeves to the underarm, unite the three pieces and shape the yoke to the neck. Complete step by step instructions for the cables. The hat is a great introduction to this marvelous new technique. In our Canadian Regal wool.
Print version comes in a 3-hole, archival quality sheet protector.
Materials:
- “Canadian Regal” wool from Schoolhouse Press: 6 skeins “Quoddy Blue” and 1 skein “Cream” (worsted weight 272 yds = 4 oz/113g)
- Two 24” circular needles, a size or two apart (use needle sizes that will achieve gauge based on YOUR GAUGE SWATCH, ex. 5 and 7)
- One 16” circular needle (or two 24”) for sleeves, size to achieve gauge of 5 sts per inch
- Stitch Markers
- Cable Needle
Gauge Information:
Body and Sleeves: 5 sts = 1” over stockinette stitch
Cable Pattern for Yoke: 6.5 - 7 sts = 1 inch over 6-stitch Cable pattern
Gauge/Swatching Advice from Schoolhouse Press Pattern #17:
“The tricky part is sizing the yoke (and its decreases) relative to the body, for the cable gauge is quite different from stocking stitch gauge. However, this difference does lead you in the right direction, since, when you switch from ss to the cable, the gauge shrinks, mimicking what would be the first of the yoke decreases. It is very important to know the relationship between these two gauges, so swatching is essential. What better way to swatch than to knit the hat? (This will also help you to understand the sweater yoke shaping.” Note: Pattern SPP#17 includes complete instructions for both the Sweater and the Hat.
