After Alice falls down the rabbit hole, her adventures in Wonderland start. Things get ‘curiouser and curiouser’. One of the most significant themes in Alice in Wonderland - I find - is the importance of embracing your true self. Alice struggles with the expectations and constraints placed on her by society. As she navigates the strange and unpredictable world of Wonderland, she learns to embrace her unique qualities and strengths. This story has inspired me at so many points in life, because of this theme. At this point, expanding my skills as a knitting teacher and starting my path as a knitwear designer, the book is constantly on my bedside table.
Designing a sock pattern with holes in it, was probably meant to be. When I knit the pattern for the first time, I could not think of anything else than Alice’s rabbit hole. Are you ready to jump into this rabbit hole with me, by knitting up a wonderful pair of these lace socks?

Have you never knit lace before? No worries! The pattern contains some helpful videos. I am sure that, after you’ve knit up these socks, you’ll fall down the rabbit hole of knitting lace.

Notes:

  • This pattern is for a top-down lace sock, with a heel flap and gusset, knit using the magic loop method of knitting in the round.
  • When using the magic loop method for knitting in the round: make sure you don’t lose your yarn over at the end of a needle when knitting in pattern.
  • Pattern contains some helpful video links. All my video’s about sock knitting: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2ksUm3hNRYWR12nstnxs_... Video’s are in Dutch; use the English subtitles YouTube provides, when needed.
  • Need some extra help with learning how to knit socks from beginning to end (also toe up), and how to read English knitting patterns? Find complete online courses through my Online Brei Campus (Dutch Only). You can find all the information here: https://www.mirjammolenbeek.nl/online-brei-campus/ The Campus also has courses in sweater knitting, knitting cables, colourwork and much more!

Yarn:

  • 100 grams (425 meters) of fingering weight sock yarn. The largest size will use up more yarn than the smaller sizes. 100 grams is enough yarn for knitting the socks in the largest size (size Large, European shoe size 49).
  • to make the lace pattern stand out, tonal or lightly speckled yarns will work best. But off course you can experiment with this and make your own choice!

Sample used:
- Sock Neon Coral, handdyed yarn by Ge-woonjans. 100 gram (425 meters), 75% Bluefaced Leicester and 25% nylon, superwash.

Needles:
2.00 mm (or size needed to obtain gauge), 80 or 100 cm circular needle
The lace pattern makes the sock wider than a plain stockinette sock, so you might need a needle size smaller than you usually use to get the right gauge.

Gauge:
32 sts x 52 rnds in pattern stitch
32 sts x 48 rnds in stockinette stitch
(knit in the round, washed & blocked) = 10 cm

Sizes:
Pattern is written for: kids, (small, medium, large)
European shoe size: 27-32 (33-37, 38-42, 43-49)
Foot circumference: 16-19 (20-22 cm, 23-25, 26-28) cm
