I recall being afraid of cables when I was a new knitter. They were so thickly textured and beautiful and surely, I thought, you had to be an experienced knitter to work this kind of fancy magic. But I sat down with a book (because the Internet didn’t exist yet) and learned. As it turns out, many cables are very easy. They are made simply with knits and purls, nothing more. The magic of cables comes from knitting the stitches out of order. Each cable pattern describes the new order to knit the stitches.
