My significant other needed a really warm toque, and requested one that covered his ears and had the rolled up band of a traditional knitted toque. However, I am new to crochet and wanted a new challenge. None of the “beanie” patterns I found had this feature so I added the rolled up band, but kept it in pattern by reversing the stitches from back loop only to front loop only.

The pattern is a unisex adult size, for about a 22” circumference.

This toque can be made rather quickly with a single ball of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick (5 oz. 87 yards) and a 10mm hook.

Round 1: Start with a magic loop. Make 6 sc in the ring. (6 sts)
Using back loop only for all “sc” until noted below.
Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch (12 sts)
Round 3: * 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc * repeat from * to * around (18 sts)
Round 4: * 2 sc in the next st, 2 sc * repeat from * to * around (24 sts)
Round 5: * 2 sc in the next st, 3 sc * repeat from * to * around (30 sts)
Round 6: * 2 sc in the next st, 4 sc * repeat from * to * around (36 sts)
Round 7: * 2 sc in the next st, 5 sc * repeat from * to * around (42 sts)

At this point, measure to make sure your circumference is close to what you require. Small tweaks can be made at this point if needed.

Rounds 8 to 17: 1 blo sc in each stich around. Continue to work in a spiral, do not join.

When your toque is the length you like, in my case – to the bottom of the ears – switch to working in the Front-Loop-Only. This switch means that when the bottom is rolled up for extra warmth around the ears, the spiral pattern shows.

I worked 6 rounds in FLO to get the desired rolled up band.

Penultimate round: ss to join the last round (I had a marker at the end of Round 7 to approximate rounds)

Last round: ss around in both loops. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
