Great news! I have updated my popular Daffodil Lifecycle pattern to include a male lifecycle! I have also added cloaks (so that they can stay warm in the winter) and the bulb sprout children now come in three sizes.

Years ago at my son’s Waldorf preschool, I fell in love with peg dolls. Then sadly I realized how fiddly it was to knit their tiny clothes. So I set myself to re-designing them-even getting rid of the wooden peg doll altogether! Now with much joy I have knitter-friendly peg dolls.

Seamless Construction:
A body, knit in the round from skirt hem to hat top.
Arms, (one I-cord) knit in one piece and slid into position through arm hole.
Wooden bead head, that stays in place with a pipe cleaner.
Yarn hair, added with a tapestry needle.
Hat brim, knit in the round and slid over the hat top.
A hollow inside, meaning minimal ends to weave in. Just push the ends through as you go!

Other than being Waldorf inspired my inspiration comes from the New Zealand countryside where I grew up, Elsa Beskow and her beautiful illustrations, the artist Holly Hobbie and her amazing bonnets, the story of the root children by Sibylle Von Olfers and simple Scandinavian dolls and toys.

Each doll can be knit in a few hours. A knitter once told me she managed to finish one during her child’s nap time.
This pattern includes a detailed photo tutorial to help make a very clear pattern. it also has a printer-friendly version so you do not have to print out lots of colored photos. It has been thoroughly test knit and tech edited.
The dolls can stand independently so you can admire them every time you walk past your mantle, nature table, or office desk.
This pattern is suitable for the intermediate knitter.
As toys they are meant for three and up, and can provide hours of open-ended play.

Supplies Needed:
Yarn: You will use 10 yards/9 meters or less of each color per doll in worsted weight.
Needles: One set of double-pointed needles in size US 2 (2.75mm), or size to obtain gauge.
12mm wooden bead: You will need one per doll. I use light and dark wood for a diversity of dolls.
Pipe cleaner: You will need one pipe cleaner per doll.
