Daffodowndilly Cuffs and Mitts
Introduction
Inspired by the arrival of spring, these cuffs form part of our prudent welcome to the change of season: Their colours reflect the new growth appearing out of the once dormant ground while providing practical warmth against the sometimes still cold air. For although, in the words of A.A. Milne, “winter is dead”, inconsistency in our weather is one of the unpredictable joys of life in the UK.
There are two versions of this pattern: Short cuffs or longer mitts. Both are knitted in the round, using Fair Isle patterns more usually associated with Sanquhar knitting from our more westerly neighbours in Dumfries and Galloway (such as “Shepherd’s Plaid” and “Midge and Fly”), yet the inclusion of a third colour softens the geometric design, providing interest both to the knitter and the wearer. Charts have been included to personalise each with initials and the year.
Skills Required
Knitting in the round using either double pointed needles (dpns) or a circular needle using the magic loop technique; long tail cast on, knit, purl, decreasing and increasing stitches, Fair Isle colour work (patterns are provided in chart form).
