Dahlia D'Oyley
This pattern is adapted from a 1915 book of edgings, insertions, and medallions. It reminds me of the single dahlia flower. Dahlias were one of my mother’s favourites, treasured for their brilliant blooms that last right up until frost. They are wonderful cut-flowers, lasting many days ~ this D’Oyley would be lovely to place under a vase of spectacularly coloured blooms!
Using worsted weight cotton and a 4.5mm hook, my cloth is about 8 ½ inches across; the D’Oyley about 15 inches. Of course, this can be worked in any yarn or thread with an appropriately sized hook. It would make a nice coffee mug coaster, using fingering weight cotton; you could make a delicate d’oyley for a small vase by using size 10 thread. How about a rug, using super-bulky yarn or t-shirt yarn?
My D’Oyley used a little less than 50g/2 ounces yarn.
If you have any difficulty with the pattern, or find any errors, please let me know--here on Ravelry, or on my Facebook page. I welcome any feedback, and would appreciate adding to ‘Favourites’ here, or post comments and photos of finished items on my Facebook page.
