A vintage pattern brought forward in time. A technique that should be dusted off and learned by those who love filet. This pattern is designed for the beginner in shadow filet.

I have re-charted and re-written the pattern so that the modern crocheter can follow the instructions easily. The only stitches needed for this pattern are chain, sc, tr, and a chain of picots (easier than you think!).

Shadow Filet was originally worked with #50 weight cotton thread. Most of today’s crocheters don’t work with thread that fine. If you wish to try your hand with a #50 weight thread - the only manuacturer that I now is DMC Cordonnet.

This pattern is worked in #10 thread and so it is fairly large. If you are comfortable with lace weight yarns then you will be comfortable with #10 cotton thread.

This pattern will look lovely in #20, #30, and #40 weight threads.

Please note that the Shadow Filet portion of this pattern is a chart. There are written instructions to get you started on the first few rows. This is because all filet patterns are charts. It’s just easier to follow a chart for filet.

The border is both written and charted.

Note that the smaller your thread is then the smaller your doily will be. Adjust your hook sizes accordingly.

Even if you haven’t worked successfully with filet before, you should try this “new again” type of filet. It’s so simple. We will be using this pattern.

Shadow Filet - Filet blocks worked with 5 stitches per block. This allows you to cut the block into sections so that it is not completely solid or completely open.
