Tausendschön Shawl – Daisy is a crescent-shape shawl based on Herbert Niebling’s pattern of the same name, Daisy in English. The original pattern is a very small doily. I added rows and modified it from a circular to a crescent shape. Daisy is meant to be a one-skein project (unless you are a loose knitter) so perfect for a quick knit and/or as a gift. It is a fairly straight-forward pattern but is engaging enough for experienced lace knitters. It changes from chart to chart yet requires only basic lace knitting stitches which makes it a relaxing and enjoyable project.

Daisy is worked from the top down with increases throughout the body. It uses approximately one skein – 437y/400m – of sock-weight yarns. It may also be knitted in heavy-lace or lace-weight yarn for a more open look. Please compare your usage to the test knitters (page 3 of the pattern) to ensure you have enough yarn if only one skein of fingering weight is being used. The shawl may be knitted with or without beads.

Yarns
Lace, heavy lace, and fingering-weight yarns are all suitable, in solid, semi solid, variegated, or gradient. Finished dimensions may be adjusted by using different yarn weight and needle size to achieve varying gauges. Yardage required is dependent on yarn weight and needle size. Test knit samples using fingering and heavy-lace-weight yarn on US4 / 3.5mm and US5 / 3.75mm needles used less than 437y / 400m. Please see next page for all the test knit information.

With a smaller shawl, it’s recommended to select a base containing fiber content (e.g., silk, linen, bamboo) that allows to be blocked aggressively while retaining the blocked shape (as opposed to pure wool that springs back when unpinned).

To best showcase the various stitch patterns of the design, self-striping or wildly variegated yarn with vast tonal differences is NOT recommended.

Gauge
Gauge isn’t important but will determine the final size of the shawl.

Needles
Sample shawl is knitted on US4 / 3.5mm and US5 / 3.75mm needles. Go up or down needle size depending on the weight of your yarn and the tension of your knitting. Please note that this will affect yardage requirement.

Tools
Circular needles in size US4 / 3.5mm and US5 / 3.75mm depending on your gauge, stitch markers, blunt tapestry needle, crochet hook or other tool if you are adding beads, T-pins, and blocking wire(s) and mat (optional).

Beads
Size 6 rounds for lace weight, size 6 rounds or size 5 triangles for fingering weight. Bead all or just some of these charts.
