I’ve been so interested in different regional folk dress lately as well as historical knitting in Sweden. In January of this year the Dalarna mittens were born. A marriage between referencing history and my need for destashing in the present, these colorful mittens use scrap yarn as a way to do a weaving pattern close to mosaic knitting.

The Dalarna Mittens come in 5 sizes: toddler, child, Adult S, M and L. For 100% transparency, all sizes apart from the Adult S have been tested, so if there are discrepancies or you would even be interested in testing the size S, please contact me!

Worked with a DK weight non superwash main color, the main color acts as a sort of cage for the scraps working as an interlocking for the fringe and frame for the scraps to create vertical stripes. The color possibilities as endless and I look forward to what kind of creative versions people come up with!

Gauge: 19 sts x 26 rows in woven pattern

Toddler : (hand circumference approx 10cm / 3.9”) (length of mitten excluding cuff is 11.5)

Child : hand circumference approx 15cm/ 5.9”) (length of mitten excluding the cuff is 16.5cm)

Adult small (hand circumference approx 18cm/ 7”) (length of mitten excluding cuff is 19cm)

Adult medium (hand circumference approx 20cm / 7.9”) (mitten excluding cuff is 20cm)

Adult Large (hand circumference approx 22cm/ 8.6”) (mitten excluding cuff is 22cm)

Toddler and child sizes: recommend using scraps that are at least 25cm + in length)

Adult sizes: (choose scraps that are around 40cm + in length for the body of the mitten, recommended to split splice scraps for the thumb)

Supplies:
3.0mm circulars /alt dpns, 3.5mm circulars / alt dpns, 4 stitch markers, a piece of scrap yarn, tapestry needle, scissors

Yarn: (please note this is an estimation and can vary depending on main yarn selection and meterage)

-Toddler size: approx 30g of main color yarn (dk weight)
-Child size: approx 40g of main color yarn (dk weight)

Adult sizes:
-Small: 70g of main color yarn (dk weight)
-Medium: 80g of main color yarn (dk weight)
-Large: 100g of main color yarn (dk weight)

Scraps of varying weights to make worsted or aran strands held single or together

(For the adult size please ensure that the scraps are at least 40cm long)
