Materials
Choice of Yarn:
The shawls shown here are knitted in DK/sport or 4-ply/fingering.
They are shown as having the same background – or Main Colour (MC), throughout. While the colour work is comprised of a variety of Contrast Colour (CC), yarns.
MC – 400m
CC – 400m

There is no necessity to stay with a single MC, and you can have as few, or as many CCs as wanted.

The shawls in the pattern were knitted with variegated CC yarns.

Similarly, any weight of yarn can be used – bearing in mind the amount of yarn, in grams/meters needed, and the size of needles will change.

For colourwork, go up at least one, if not two sizes of the needles size recommended on the ball.

Note on the size of the shawls: the shawls shown in the pictures will comfortably cover your shoulders, for bigger shawls, to wrap around more of you!, you will need to use up to 800m of both your MC and CCs.

Needles: 4.50mm (US 7) – plus a larger size for the bind-off

Gauge: 27 sts and 29 rows - 4 in/10 cm in stocking st after blocking in 4-ply yarn.

Note on gauge: gauge is not as essential as it would be if you were making a garment to wear, but if you have more than 27sts to 10cm, it will make your shawl smaller than the ones shown here).

There are two versions of the shawl - depending on the shape/size you are after and, the level of knitting complexity wanted!

This pattern seeks to capture some of the diversity and vibrancy of Dalston Junction, in the London Borough of Hackney, UK.

This pattern will provide you with the guidance to complete your shawl, however, in true Hackney style, as you get going on your project, what you thought you’d started out doing, may not be what you finish up with.

There may be diversions on the way, as new ideas pop into your head and your understanding of how the shawl is constructed, develops.
