Dandelion Clocks
This pattern now includes a version using Fyberspates Cumulus. The number of pattern repeats is different in the Cumulus version as it’s a finer yarn and a slightly larger finished shawl. The Cumulus version of the pattern is included in a separate file.
This shawl was originally designed for Knit and Kin, a collaboration between Lottieknits (that’s me!) and Fyberspates.

Dandelion Clocks is a pretty yet unfussy shawl designed to work well with yarn in semi-solid or variegated shades.
This shawl was inspired by the delicate structure of dandelion seed heads or ‘clocks’ as they are often known. Although dandelions are a weed, like many wild flowers they do have a certain beauty to them (providing they’re in a meadow rather than a well-manicured lawn!). I wanted to design a one skein shawl that would work just as well for variegated yarns as semi-solid coloured yarns and the simple yet interesting texture of Estonian star stitches creates interest without being too ornate. The other lace patterns evolve from this starting point, becoming gradually more open and airy until the dandelion clock inspired border which you can add beads to the edge of if you wish.
All lace patterns have small repeats so are written rather than charted.

Yarn:
Small lilac shawl:
Fyberspates Faery Wings (67% Silk, 23% Mohair, 10% Nylon, 350m per 100g skein) shade: ‘Lavender Pink’, one skein Yarn note: Fyberspates is dyed in limited edition colourways.
Medium turquoise variegated shawl:
Posh Yarn Gretchen Sock (55% Superwash BFL, 45% Silk, 400m per 100g skein) shade: ‘Dew, Minute, Translucent, Bright’, one skein
Yarn note: Posh Yarn is dyed in one-off, non-repeatable colourways.
Substituting yarns:
Choose a yarn which will drape well. Yarns with a high silk content work best, alpaca would also work well.
I would advise against using high twist yarns as shawls made in these yarns tend to spring back after blocking.
Tension:
Tension note:
Fyberspates Faery wings is a slightly thicker yarn than the yarn used for the medium sized shawl, so knits up to a slightly looser tension.
Fyberspates Faery Wings:
18 sts and 30 rows to 10cm (4”) in star pattern after blocking
Posh Yarn Gretchen Sock:
23 sts and 31 rows to 10cm (4”) in star pattern after blocking
Needles:
4mm circular at least 80cm long
(Shawl is knitted flat, but a circular needle is necessary in order to accommodate the large number of sts)
Notions:
Tapestry needle
Optional:
1.0mm crochet hook for adding beads
Beads (shown on small shawl):
Small shawl: 220 size 5/0 Miyuki triangle beads (shown in Sparkling Lilac Lined Crystal AB from Crystals and Ice)
Medium shawl: 260 size 5/0 Miyuki triangle beads
Any beads size 5/0 or 6/0 will work.
