The inspiration for the Dangling Diamonds scarf / stole was from a pair of elegant silk stockings that are part of the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. They are displayed online at http://tinyurl.com/metmusestockings.
The beginning and ending sections of the scarf / stole are large diamonds within diamonds, suspended from a single small lace diamond. Next is a more complex section of lace diamonds with center lace flowers, and bordered by diagonal pathways dotted with single lace holes.
The original stitch pattern was worked in silk stockings in very fine gauge. Hopefully the lady that wore them found a way of artfully showing off these stunning stockings amidst her billowing skirts. The lace would have been greatly admired!
