Danish Fisherman's Mittens
Summary: Normal thumb gore, two thumbs on each mitten, one on each side; double-pointed needles
Finished size: 8” (20.5 cm) around by 7.5” (19 cm) long, excluding ribbing
Materials: 2 oz (56.5 g) brown worsted-weight wool; 2 oz (56.5 g) white worsted-weight wool; size 2 (2.75 mm) double-pointed needles
Description:
Danish fishermen used “spear” mittens made with two thumbs. Because the thumb area was the first to wear out, mittens with an extra thumb lasted twice as long. The checkerboard pattern comes from early Jutland mittens.
