Dansur Faroese Inspired Shawl
Dansur is a lace shawl based upon the shaping of traditional Faroese shawls. The shawls of this region are known for their distinctive center back panel, which keeps the shawl in place, even when worn without a shawl pin. Dansur is named after the medieval Faroese folk dances, which exist only in the Faroe Islands. The circular and chain shapes of the dance are reflected in the shawl’s design.
This top down shawl begins with a simple pattern followed by a short transition to beaded edging. Because the edging is knitted sideways as an applied trim, there is no long bind off! Beads are optional, but add so much to the pattern they echo.
Dansur is knitted in fingering or light fingering weight yarn and is recommended for intermediate knitters. It measures approximately 72”/183 cm wide by 23” / 58 cm deep.
Fingering or light fingering weight yarn: 620 yards/567 m
Beads: 600 E or 6/0, purchase extra in case some are imperfect
Knitting needles: Circular US size 4 to 6/3.50 to 4.00 mm, loose knitters use smaller needle sizes; 1 straight needle to match circulars
Steel crochet hook for beading: US size 12/1.00 mm
Stitch markers: Optional, but may use one to separate the right, center, and left portions of the shawl. Split markers are recommended.
