Sweaters are one of my favorite things to knit. I find myself daydreaming about Fall and Winter during the summertime. As soon as it is cool enough, I get to break out my sweater stash! After making several different sweaters, I figured out what features I liked best and set out to design my “perfect” sweater.
Positive ease: I like a little bit of room in my sweaters. This sweater is designed with 1-2” of positive ease. If you want a sweater with a closer fit, make 1 size smaller than listed for your measurements.
Saddle shoulders: My experience with raglan shoulders has been that they want to slide back on my shoulders. The first time I knit a sweater with a “saddle shoulder” I fell in love. The shaping allows the sweater to sit on top of the shoulders. The shaping runs along the front and back of the top of the shoulder and then right down the front and back of the point where your shoulder meets your arm. It won’t slip or slide anywhere.
Boat neck: Boat necks are my favorite. The neck of the sweater isn’t too close to my neck and it isn’t so low cut that I feel like I can’t bend forward for fear of a wardrobe malfunction. Therefore, I have a bit more modesty, but not too much, as it shows a bit of collarbone, which I don’t mind flaunting.
Thumbholes (optional): This is an element I’ve always wanted to add to sweaters I have made, but inevitably forget until it is finished and I am wearing it. The thumbhole option allows you to wear the sleeves as if they are fingerless gloves. You can wear them full length, which would cover most of your fingers or fold the top half above your thumb over to bring them back to your knuckles. In addition, if you don’t want to have the sleeves up over your hands at a given moment, there is enough length to fold the ribbing over and conceal the thumbhole.
Sizes & Fitting
Designed with 1-2” of positive ease. If you want a more fitted garment, knit 1 size smaller than your measurements.
XS (S, M, L)(XL, 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X)
Bust measurement (inches): 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42)(44-46, 48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62)
Bust measurement (centimeters): 71-76 (81-86, 91.5-96.5, 101.5-106.5) (111.5-117, 122-127, 132-137, 142-147, 152-158)
Proper fit/Sizing: The best way to ensure your sweater will fit properly is to try it on as you knit. Stitches can be moved to scrap yarn hold or a circular needle with enough length to fit around your body as you pull the sweater over your head (40-60”). If you really don’t want to do that (though I promise, it will help you tailor the sweater perfectly), you can take good measurements of your body in key spots in the pattern so you know when to transition. For example, to determine when you should begin body decreases, measure the distance from your underarm to the point just below your bust, where your bra band would sit. That will let you know how far to knit before decreasing. However, keep in mind, if you have a larger bust, you may need more length to account for the sweater stretching outward for the bust.
