Darting in Circles
This versatile, one-size fits all wrap has a wonderful, loose drape. It can be worn as both a knee-length, sleeveless cardigan and as a cozy, waist-length shrug depending on which way you hold as up when you insert your arms. The whole piece is knit in stockinette with a garter stitch border around the entire circumference, making the whole garment fully reversible. The piece is created by first making a half-circle section with increases that appear as darts. Stitches are picked up along the straight edge of the half-circle and then set aside while a second half-circle is knit. Once stitches are picked up along the straight edge of this second section, the two long sides are grafted together using either kitchener stitch or a three-needle bind-off. The piece is finished with a garter stitch border.
While the piece is intended to be one size fits all, there are areas for customization in fit, especially in the width of the shoulders, which are noted in the pattern. The finished size is an approximately 54” diameter circle. Because the construction of this piece is fairly simple, it could easily be resized to be either smaller or larger if desired.
Approximately 9 skeins of Rico Design Baby Classic DK acrylic yarn in the color Navy were used to make this pattern.
