This knit pattern was designed for the inaugural Local Yarn Store (LYS) Day, April 21, 2018.
This unisex cowl is a modular knit, worked seamlessly in sections that build upon each other.
The pattern is named for Dr. Margaret Oakley Dayhoff, American physical chemist and pioneer in the field of bioinformatics. She developed the one-letter code used for amino acids, to reduce the size of the data files used to describe amino acid sequences in an era of punch-card computing.
It seems apropos that the 3-letter code for the amino acid Lysine is ‘LYS’, and the 1-letter code assigned to Lysine by Dr. Dayhoff is ‘K’ (a common abbreviation for ‘Knit’).
