Dead Men Tell No Tales
Yo ho, me hearties! These pirate-themed socks will keep your feet toasty but don’t let anyone steal them! Worked from the top down with a flap and gusset heel, these socks are a treat for fans of stranded colourwork. Some experience of the stranded technique will definitely be an advantage as there are some areas where the yarn will need to be carried across a large number of stitches. Either twist the yarns together every few stitches to anchor the carried yarn at the back, or use a crochet hook to ladder up the long floats before anchoring as per photo tutorial in the pattern.
The pattern is offered in three sizes, Small (to fit 7 ½”-8”/19-20cm foot circumference), Medium (to fit 8½”-9”/22-23cm foot circumference), and Large (to fit 9½”-10”/24-25.5cm foot circumference) when worked to pattern tension of 8.5 sts to 1”/2.5cm over stranded pattern on 2.25mm (US 1) needles. Bear in mind the fabric produced when stranding colours is often less stretchy.
You will need: up to 400 yards (365m) fingering weight sock yarn in main colour (black in knitted sample)
200 yards (180m) fingering weight sock yarn in contrast colour (red-orange in knitted sample)
2.25mm (US1) needles for knitting in the round
Darning needle (for weaving in ends)
2 stitch markers
Crochet hook - optional, for laddering long floats if using this method.
You need to be able to: work in the round using a suitable method for socks, work stranded colourwork from a chart. Note the pattern includes areas of long carries of unworked yarn. It may not be suitable for beginners to colourwork for this reason.
