Dearly Beloved
An easy, breezy, top-down shawl…
featuring garter stitch, stockinette, eyelets, and a field of lace,
knit in a lightweight silk yarn…
using slightly more than half-pi shaping, so it will stay in place on your shoulders, and can be worn in a variety of ways.
This pattern is written. The lace is a very easy 4 stitch, 4 row repeat, with wrong side “rest rows”. With an additional cone of yarn, the shawl can be made larger by knitting the lace section twice, before moving on to the garter stitch edge.
MATERIALS USED
Yarn: 1 cone Ito Kinu (100% Silk lace weight, 50g=464yds/425m) 42g=390yds/356m used, in Prune.
(2 cones will be necessary if a larger shawl is desired.)
Needles & Notions:
Size US 8 (5.0mm) 32” - 40” / 80cm - 100cm circular needle (or size to obtain gauge)
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Locking stitch marker
Stitch markers
Blocking supplies (optional)
Steam iron (optional)
GAUGE
Not crucial, but will affect the finished size of the shawl as well as required yardage.
4 sts = 1” or 2.5cm in stockinette on US 8 (5.0mm) needles after blocking.
Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain gauge, or to achieve a fabric you like.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
58” (147cm) top edge width x 21” (53cm) deep x 148” (376cm) bottom edge width
NOTES ON MODIFYING SIZE:
For a larger shawl, use heavier weight yarn on larger needles. With modifications, yarn amounts/gauge/finished size will vary from pattern.
OR:
For a larger shawl using lace weight yarn, or to increase the lace section: continue working the 4-row lace pattern in Section 7 up to 4 more repeats (16 more rows), followed by up to 16 more rows knit plain in garter stitch before binding off. You will need approximately 10 yards of yarn for EACH extra row, and approx. 40 yards for binding off.
