Deb's Cabled Hat
Launch week special: 30% off with code: DEB30
This cable-packed, double-brimmed beanie was originally designed and knit for my Mother-in-Law, Deb, who is both very knitworthy, and loves the aesthetic of Celtic designs. The pattern was inspired by Norah Gaughan’s amazing Cabled Sourcebooks.
I love the squishy cables, cozy tight ribbing, and the range of head sizes and hat heights that comes with a big doubled brim. I haven’t been able to stop wearing my second sample!
Woolly wools are my preference for a cabled hat, but the original was knit in a superwash wool and knit up well, too! Solid colors and tonals are recommended to best show off the cables.
Directions are both charted and written.
MATERIALS
YARN
215yds Malabrigo Rios (210yds/100g)*
215yds Plymouth Galway (210yds/100g)*
OR any worsted weight yarn with comparable gauge and good stitch definition.
Important: Please note that I was able to knit this hat with one skein of Plymouth Galway, however, there were virtually zero leftovers (8g/16yds). With a 10% buffer, this puts the hat at a smidge over one skein. If you don’t like playing yarn chicken, a second skein would be handy, or you might choose to shorten your brim by a few rounds.
NEEDLES
US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles, 16” long (Brim)
US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles, 16” long (Main/Body)
US 7 preferred needles for crown decreases/small circumference knitting (dpns/magic loop) (Crown)
NOTIONS
Darning needle,
Six (6) stitch markers (one being unique for the BOR marker)
Cable needle (CN) or extra DPN for cabling.
Optional: You might find a row counter, a locking stitch marker in your work, or just the printed pattern & pen useful for keeping track of rounds.
GAUGE
32 sts & 28 rounds/4” (10cm)
Each motif: 2.75”(7cm) wide x 2”(5cm) tall in cabled pattern on gauge/main needles after blocking.
SIZING/DIMENSIONS - One size: Teen-Adult M/L (~21”-23”). Width: 8.75” Height: 10.75” (brim unfolded)
The design stretches to accommodate a wide range of head sizes. The folded brim allows for a variety of hat heights depending on preference.
