Experiencing a delay in photo’s uploading, but I’m sure they’ll be up soon!
Deco Decadence Shawl
Six canvas like panels, featuring abundant lace and twists to depict Art Deco motifs of line and symmetry in rich decadence!
This Hexagonally shaped cape-style shawl is made up of six panels increasing steadily in width by way of yarnovers to form a body enfolding piece with waterfall like drape. I used 6 different colourways to create the transitioning palette for the sample of this shawl and noted at which points I made my changes in the Notes section, but please feel free to bring an element of ‘rule breaking’ to your palette which provides a perfect opportunity in this piece for nod to a time in fashion & design of breaking established norms in freedom embracing expression - you can go with as many or as little shades as you feel like, and change colours as and when you wish!
More details regarding the rate of increase & construction, and colourways are laid out in the Notes
Knitting skills & techniques used:
Adventurous Intermediate/ Advanced: Casting on, binding off, knitting, purling. Increases by way of Yarnovers (YO). Lacework stitches such as Slip Slip Knit (SSK), Knit 2 Together (K2TOG), Central Double Decrease (CDD), and yarnovers (YO), as well as Right and Left leaning twists (RT & LT) feature heavily in this pattern, over lengthy chart rows, with most of the charts having (WS) Purl rest rows.
Materials: Approx 2,346 metres / 2,562 yards Fingering weight yarn.
The following yarn usage amounts are an approximate guide and includes the approximate yardage amounts I used of each colour.
The yardage amounts shown are a little over what was used in view of rounding up to give you several grams room regarding what’s required for each of the 6 yarns:
Whilst any Fingering weight yarn with good drape & stitch definition will work fine, for the sample I used Fyberspates Yarns, ‘Vivacious 4 ply’, 100% Wool - Merino, 100g, 365 meters / 399 yards
Yarn A: ‘Verdegris’, (Multi-tonal Green) (amount used 391 meters / 427 yards)
Yarn B: ‘Silver and Bronze’, (Bronze) (amount used 391 metres / 427 yards)
Yarn C: ‘Smokey Joe’, (Brownish Dark Grey) (amount used 391 meters / 427 yards)
Yarn D: ‘Dove Stone’, (Warm Beige Grey) (amount used 391 metres / 427 yards)
Yarn E: ‘Pebble Beach’, (Bluish Grey) (amount used 391 meters / 427 yards)
Yarn F: ‘Slate’, (Cold Grey) (amount used 391 metres / 427 yards)
Needles: 3.75mm / US 5 (100cm – 150cm cord length minimum)
Notions: 8 stitch markers, tapestry needle/crochet hook for weaving ends
Gauge: Both with 3.75 mm / US 5 needles (after blocking)
27 sts & 38 rows in Stockinette Stitch, over 4” (10 cm). You can also use the chart on the following page which is taken from the stitch pattern of Chart 2 (this includes both lace and twists, with (WS) rows worked as purl) the horizontal centre line shows 31 sts over 4.5” (11.4 cm), whilst the vertical line shows 48 rows over 5.5” (14 cm), I suggest adding a marker at the point where those 2 lines meet for measuring accuracy. Note: Whilst gauge is not essential, I would recommend trying to reach gauge with this piece to avoid a dramatic difference in finished measurements / yarn usage from the sample numbers.
