Deel Shawl
Deel is the Dutch word for part. You can also use the word deel to describe a half of something.
The Deel Shawl is a symmetrical triangular design. It has a modular construction that creates two triangles which are joined halfway. One half is worked horizontally and the other half vertically. It uses the Tunisian simple stitch and is suitable for adventurous beginners who are familiar with the Tunisian crochet basics. This pattern offers detailed instructions including photo tutorials and a schematic.
Sample 1 (rainbow version) is made with self striping sock yarn which was dyed to create a sock pair that looks the same. These types of yarn are usually sold in 100 gram or 2x 50 gram quantities. This amount of yarn will turn your project into a lovely shawlette.
Sample 2 (purple green version) is made with two colors, striped in a 2-row sequence for the horizontal half and a 4-row sequence for the vertical half creating a big shawl. This way of making the shawl will give more freedom in the amount of yarn used and with that you can turn your project into any size you want.
Size
Shawlette (after blocking and pinned out to size): 115 x 53 cm / 45” x 21”
Shawl (after blocking): 150 x 74 cm / 59” x 29”
The size is easily adjustable to suit your preference and available yarn.
Yarn
The shawlette requires 420 meters/459 yards per 100 grams or 2x 210 meters/230 yards per 50 grams of fingering weight yarn that’s dyed to create a perfect pair of socks with a striping or gradient effect.
Sample 1 is made with: Rellana Garne, Flotte Socke 4 Fach Perfect Tropical, colorway 1791 Jamaica; 75% wool, 25% polyamide; 420 meters/459 yards per 100 grams.
The shawl requires 800 meters/872 yards or 200 grams of fingering weight yarn that creates a striping or gradient effect or at least 2 different colors to create your own stripes. Consider using leftover stash to create a random striped shawl.
Sample 2 is made with: hand dyed yarn by Boutique Peridot, 90% merino, 10% nylon; 400 meters/436 yards per 100 grams.
Gauge
For this design the stitch width and row height are the same, called a square gauge. This means an equal amount of stitches and rows per 10 cm / 4”. The gauge for both sample (pattern gauge) is
16.5 stitches and 16.5 rows in Tss = 10 cm / 4”.
You can make this design with any gauge that is square (e.g. 12.5x12.5, 15x15, 18x18). Note that, when you work with a square gauge that’s different from pattern gauge, your yarn usage and the final dimensions will differ from the samples. Aim for a fabric that drapes nicely.
