Notes from the Designer:
A crescent shawl worked in two directions, Della’s stitch patterns are easily memorized without being too boring. Elegant enough to be worn to a fancy dinner party, yet casual enough to pair with jeans, Della is a versatile piece that will quickly become your new wardrobe staple.
- Slip all stitches with yarn to RS of work.
- Body is first worked sideways from right tip to left tip. Stitches are picked up for the lace border and worked vertically from top to bottom.
- Pattern is written as the sample was knit. However, after reading the pattern all the way through, you may choose to use a provisional cast on, releasing the live stitches to your needle once you pick up all of your slipped stitches from the body, as you begin the lace border. (The cast on stitches are considered part of the total number of picked up stitches, including the stitches for the garter border). Similarly, once you’ve decreased the body to 5 stitches, you may choose to keep those stitches live, and move straight to the pickup instructions, counting your 5 live stitches as part of the total number of picked up stitches. It’s your choice. The pattern will look lovely either way, but one method means fewer ends to weave in.
- Feel free to add beads to the lace border (not shown), or consider using a contrasting color. This is your shawl, so make it your own.
