Demelza is a pretty little shawl, ideal for Summer wear. The lace is very open, it incorporates yarn overs on every row but it is all worked in garter stitch and so doesn’t require any directional decreases or other complications.

Between the stocking stitch upper section and the lace sits a braid, a nice little detail that creates a pretty transition point but is really quite simple to work. When your shawl is blocked the braid will be very subtle but if you like the technique consider using it on other knits, it’s a lovely decoration for cuffs in particular.

Knit as long as you have yarn, instructions are given to enable you to calculate how many lace repeats you can work (the maximum is 7, the model shows 5).

Demelza gets her name from the Poldark stories by Winston Graham.
