’Denali’ ~ a faux fair isle Cape, Hat & matching Fingerless-Mitts set

This winter inspired set took form from the desire to have an outer garment that compliments my sweater dress pattern, Ayanna. This collection once again makes use of the easy to achieve faux fair isle pattern with variations offered, along with a matching hat featuring a gathered top and coordinating fingerless-mitts for a finishing touch.

Pattern Clarification:
Faux Fair Isle (Mosaic is an easy slipped stitch pattern that gives a Fair Isle look, whereas traditional Fair Isle is the technique often used to describe colorwork knitting where stitches are knit alternately in various colors, with the unused colors stranded across the back of the work.

Designed to fit: American Girl Dolls & the comparable 18” Gotz Dolls, sized for 18” dolls that share the same body type

Pattern Features: The faux fair isle (mosaic) is achieved with the use of slipped stitches, thereby avoiding the traditional stranded color work, written out with line-by-line instructions given along with variations offered. Horizontal ribbing is worked for the edging of cape and button bands where button loop closure is added at completion and featured on hat topper.

Construction: Cape worked from the bottom up in one piece to openings, then each section is worked individually using short row method, and joined to work in one piece with minimal shaping to neckline. Hat is worked from the brim up in one piece, seamed then gathered at top with tie featured through an eyelet row.

Materials: 190 – 200 yards (3 ¾ – 4 ounces) of worsted/aran weight yarn including scraps of contrast A & B Yarn Equivalent: 8 ply/Aran, Double Knit (UK/Australia)

Notions: 2 – 4 Buttons size ½” (12mm), Darning Needle, 3 Stitch Markers, Small Crochet Hook (size F) used for button-loops and hat topper tie

Suggested Gauge: Using 3.75mm needles: 6 sts and 8 rows in 1in over horizontal ribbing based on * materials used

• Materials Used: aran weight yarn: Lion Brand’s Heartland ™ in the Denali & Sequoia colorway with Wool-Ease ™ used for contrast B

Skill Level: Easy: Project uses basic stitches, repetitive stitch patterns, simple color changes, and simple shaping and finishing.
