Note: This pattern tends to run a bit small so I advise making one size larger than you would typically choose and also some people have reported needing a bit more yarn than is listed.
Depoe Bay Shrug is a quick knit that you’ll want to toss on over a tank top and jeans, layer with your favorite sundress, and wear as a stunning “shawl with sleeves” over a dressy gown. This particular yarn and color calls out for that black velvet gown that you’d like to wear more often if only you had just the right thing to top it off. “Beach to ballgown”: what more can we ask for in a sweater?
The sweater is worked flat and bottom-up in one piece, joined at the shoulders, then sleeve stitches are picked up at the armhole and worked in the round. The outside band is also picked up and worked in the round.
Depoe Bay is known as the world’s smallest harbor but it is far from a sleepy little harbor or town. The ribbing on the shrug stands for the treacherous bar that the fishing boats must cross and the welts represent the waves and surf against which the ships must time their crossing. The mouth of the harbor is so narrow that there’s an old-timey bridge across it from which you can watch the ships position for a safe run into the harbor.
Needless to say the quaint restaurants in Depoe Bay offer wonderfully fresh seafood and the ambience is unrivaled as there is much to celebrate when the town’s fishermen return home safely.
(Shown in size 32 with 2 inches of positive ease on a small size model)
Yarn requirements: 380 (436, 479, 540, 587, 674, 727, 802) yards. Yarn requirements will vary depending on gauge. Some people have reported needing 30-50 yards more than is listed for their size.
