I have always loved legwarmers and playing Roller Derby gives me a great excuse to wear them year round! Store bought legwarmers can be too bulky to have bunched around my ankles when I’m skating and I can’t have them pulled all the way up my legs where they can interfere with the fit and safety of my knee pads. I decided to design a pair of ankle warmers for myself that look great on or off skates, incorporating my love of antiquity and pre-1920’s clothing. An added bonus of these is that they won’t be too hot to wear during the summer months either!

Starting with the Picot Hem at the bottom, these are knit flat with the larger size needles in stockinette Stitch, then joined in the round on smaller needles to knit the ribbed top in the round. Stitches for the buttonhole band are then picked up on opposite sides of the opening to create distinctive left and right pieces.

I don’t know the exact yardage I used, but it took less than a full skein of Cascade 220 Blue Tweed (9494) and less than 1/2 skein of Cascade 220 Black (6555). I used 8 different vintage metal buttons on mine, but they would look great with matching buttons too!
