Inspired by the sailor Andrei Derevenko (pronounced Derevyenko) (1878 – ca. 1921). Sturdy, straightforward, & simple but with interesting texture. One motif places a tall stitch beside a short one, supporting & balancing by alternating rows. The other motif is influenced by the X of the Andreevsky Flag (St. Andrew’s Cross), the ensign of the Imperial Russian Navy from 1712-1918. A very unisex cowl that works up well in a variety of colors. Crochet with a small side of history.
Notes:
- Gauge is not important; use appropriate hook for desired yarn.
- U.S. Crochet terminology
- 5-row repeat
- Ch 3 at beginning of row = 1 Dc
Stitches to Know:
