The DESERT STRATA SHAWL is an asymmetrical triangle shawl, knit from the cast on point to the wide end with increases along one edge. The design is an elegant interpretation of color blocking, with three distinct sections of color that bring to mind pink, windblown cliffs, sand dunes and scrub brushes of the desert. The centerpiece of the shawl is the eye-catching slip stitch colorwork section, reminiscent of the patterns on a rattlesnake’s back. The other two sections feature a rhythmic textured stitch pattern that is easily memorized yet not boring to knit.
DETAILS & MATERIALS
SIZES: One size
MEASUREMENTS
Approximately 67” along the top edge by 40” along the wide end
YARN REQUIREMENTS
Fingering weight wool or wool blend, in three contrasting colors.
Color A – 360 yards
Color B – 230 yards
Color C – 395 yards
Sample uses Woolberry Fiber Co. Berry Cormo (100% US Cormo; 420 yards per 100 grams, 2-ply construction) in “Pink Canyon” (Color A), “Peachy Keen” (Color B) and “Pine” (Color C).
Berry Cormo is a soft, non-superwash, 2-ply yarn with a loose twist. It has a wooly, rustic texture.
NEEDLES
Suggested 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needles, 32” in length
Note: I usually like using a size 5 needle for fingering weight shawls. With Berry Cormo, I found that going up in needle size, to a size 6, resulted in the gauge I preferred. If you are using a “slippery” yarn (like superwash merino, or a merino blend) you may find that a size 5 needle achieves a gauge that works better for this pattern.
NOTIONS
