Desolation Sound…sounds ominous; and in 1792, on a dismal, dark rainy day, Captain George Vancouver not impressed with the rugged beauty of the area and preferring the gentler shores of the east coast of Vancouver Island left his mark in history providing this unflattering name. Anchored in Prideaux Haven and enjoying the solitude while knitting on a new project my mind would wander back in time as a member of the crew on Capt. Vancouver’s HMS Discovery, searching for welcoming shores which are few and far between in this sound. My husband and I and Miss T Ocean, our 34ft CHB, have spent countless hours enjoying and exploring the hidden coves, winding inlets, and hiking trails, always finding something “new” on each trip.

Set off with a 46 stitch Centred Panel and incorporating a number of wavy cables to represent the numerous islands and islets strewn amid the channels and inlets making up Desolation Sound this buttoned poncho is a cable knitter’s delight. The Staghorn Cables remind us of the deep waters, steep shorelines, and beautiful mountains throughout the area. I do not often use stitch markers; however, I did find them useful to identify the centre panel as the “even” (wrong) side rows are not always what we would expect them to be, especially when knitting with a darker colour.
