Detta Shawl
This duplicit shawl was inspired by the generosity and trust provided to me by Backyard Fiberworks at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival. I knew I had to make something to feature the wonderful mini skeins I was gifted to work with. After bingeing on an entire season of Mad Men and researching vintage patterns, I decided to go with these paired waves on a triangular shawl made with garter stitch short rows.
The construction method is worked in 3 sections; main triangle, right and left sides and the short row method throughout is intuitive and easy to master. You may substitute any short row method you prefer. The pattern is written using basic w&t instructions.
The colorful waves of this shawl would also look great with a single color, a long gradient, or using (at least 15g each) of those leftovers or mini skein that you’ve been saving to show-off again.
As usual I named this shawl after a Stephen King character. This time the dark and tumultuous alternative personality; Detta from “The Gunslinger/Dark Tower” series. Detta is mathematically inclined (like most of us knitters) but with a brash and dominate persona. She is one of two patterns I will be releasing based on short row construction and featuring Backyard Fiberworks yarn. Leave me a comment and tell me what you think her upcoming “twin” will be called.
Needles:
US 7/4.5 mm or size required to obtain gauge.
Blocked Gauge:
16 sts x 28 rows garter = 4” or 10 cm
NOTE: designer knits very loosely. You may require larger needles to achieve desired gauge. Be sure to swatch and wet block aggressively. It is more critical to obtain a loosely draping fabric than to obtain exact gauge.
Recommended Yarns:
Backyard Fiberworks: Sock 100% Superwash Merino
(400 yards/100g fingering weight)
MC: Stormcloud - 109g (one hank)
CC1: Satsuma - 17g
CC2: Marigold - 17g
CC3: Marine - 17g
CC4: Trading Post - 17g
(These 4 17g mini-skeins came as a set and were each one-offs - closest color matches are listed.)
Required Skills: Short Rows
w&t - Knit the required number of stitches, bring yarn to front between needles, slip the next stitch to the right needle, bring the yarn to the back, return the slipped stitch to the left needle and turn the work to the other side—one stitch has been wrapped and you are ready to knit the next stitch.
kw&stog - to hide the wrap, insert the tip of the right needle under the wrap and pull it up onto the left needle. Knit both wrap and the wrapped stitch together.
Notions:
stitch marker, scrap yarn
