Deventer is één van de oudste steden van ons land. De stad werd gesticht in 768 en bestaat dit jaar (2018) precies 1250 jaar. Deze omslagdoek neemt je mee langs alle bezienswaardigheden van deze oude Hanzestad. Vanaf het Worpplantsoen in de punt, over de IJssel varend met het voetveer of rijdend over de Wilhelminabrug, naar de skyline van Deventer met o.a. de Lebuïnuskerk en vele andere belangrijke en kenmerkende gebouwen. Dan daarboven de bogen van de oude vestingmuur, de strakke rechte ramen van het stadhuis met daarin de vingerafdrukken, afgewisseld met afbeeldingen kenmerkend voor Deventer, zoals bijv. het Dickens Festijn, de Boekenmarkt, Stokvissen, Deventer op Stelten. De kleuren in de rand vertegenwoordigen de kleuren van de voetbalclub Go Ahead Eagles en daarmee ook de kleuren van het Wapen van Deventer. De geschiedenis van Deventer, samengevat in een gebreide omslagdoek!

Deze omslagdoek wordt gebreid van boven naar beneden, top-down, in het rond, met een knipbies. In tegenstelling tot de meeste omslagdoeken waarbij in iedere toer gemeerderd wordt en het dus steeds langer duurt voordat een toer is afgerond, wordt bij deze doek in iedere toer geminderd. Dit werkt erg motiverend! Het breien van de toeren kost immers steeds minder tijd. Je begint bij het beleg van de bovenrand, daarna de bovenrand zelf en aansluitend de omslagdoek.

Na openknippen van de knipbies wordt er een rand gebreid langs de opengeknipte delen. Deze rand wordt in één keer gebreid, in het rond, van linksboven naar de punt beneden en weer omhoog naar rechtsboven, met een knipbies tussen de twee bovenste hoekpunten. Dit beleg wordt later omgevouwen en aan de achterkant over de knipbiesrand heen vastgenaaid, zodat de opengeknipte knipbies niet meer zichtbaar is.

Deventer is one of the oldest cities in our country. The city was founded in 768 and this year (2018) it exists exactly 1250 years. This shawl takes you along all the sights of this old Hanseatic city. From the “Worpplantsoen” in the tip, sailing over the river IJssel with the foot ferry or driving on the Wilhelmina Bridge, to the skyline of Deventer with among others the Lebuïnus Church and many other important and characteristic buildings. Then above this you’ll find the arches of the old fortress wall, the straight rectangular windows of the town hall containing the fingerprints, interspersed with images typical of Deventer, such as: Dickens Festival, the Book market, Stockfishes, Deventer on Stilts. The colours in the edge represent the colours of the soccer club Go Ahead Eagles and with that the colours of the Deventer Coat-of-arms. The history of Deventer, summarized in a knitted shawl!

Although most triangular shawls are worked from the bottom up (adding stitches in every row), this shawl will be worked top-down, in the round, with a steek, decreasing stitches in every round. This way it will take less and less time to finish a round as you move through the pattern, which is very motivational!

After cutting the steek, a border is worked along the rough edges of the steek. This border is worked at once, in the round, starting from the top left corner, down to the bottom corner and up again to the top right corner, with a steek between the two top corners. Halfway through the border you’ll work the facing. At the finish the facing will be folded towards the back, and grafted to the inside of the shawl, covering the rough steek edges.
