Devonia cardigan, with, or without ruffles
This pattern is tested. List of testers at the bottom.
As I have a weak spot for romantic details in knitting, I cannot resist myself from adding elements such as ruffles, lace, curved lines or other to some of my designs.
This particular cardigan was inspired by a very old, and very much loved jacket in my wardrobe. The jacket is single-breasted and has lovely curved fronts towards the lower hem.
I wanted this curve for a knit, and on top of that I added a ruffle.
My testers were free to work the ruffled version, or the buttoned version - and they are all AMAZING!
Construction of the Devonia cardigan:
Top-down and seamless. The upper yoke is shaped by raglan, plus increases towards the fronts.
The lower bottom is worked with decreases to shape the curve.
- If working the buttoned version, the button-and-neckband is worked in one piece
- If working the ruffled version, the ruffle is worked in one piece. The sleeves are worked top-down and in-the-round.
Sizes
Finished chest measurements, when buttoned and worked at gauge:
Size 1: 81 cm/32”
Size 2: 87 cm/34”
Size 3: 92 cm/36”
Size 4: 100 cm/39.5”
Size 5: 106 cm/42”
Size 6: 112 cm/44”
Size 7: 121 cm/47.5”
Size 8: 127 cm/50”
Size 9: 138 cm/54”
The sample is worked in size 2, with approximately 7.5 cm/3” of positive ease. I recommend 0 – 10 cm/0 – 4” of ease.
Materials
Yarn: I recommend a fingering weight yarn with nice stitch-definition and drape to work your cardigan. I used Devonia 4-ply, from John Arbon Textiles, in the colour-way Devonia Cream. This yarn comes in skeins of 100 gr/3.53 oz and 388 m/420 yards. For the cardigan without the ruffle, you will need the following yardage of the above yarn: 970/1070/1200/1325/1450/1575/1700/1825/1950 m = 1060/1170/1310/1450/1580/1720/1855/1990/2125 y. If working the ruffle, you need to count for more yarn: 300/350/350/400/400/450/450/500/500 m = 330/385/385/440/440/490/490/550/550 yards.
Needles size 3 mm/US2.5 (or size to achieve gauge.
Gauge
28 sts and 36 - 38 rows/rounds = 10 x 10 cm/4 x 4” in broken rib. For best results, I recommend that you work a swatch to determine gauge.
