Diagonal Moss Stitch Washcloth
Worked diagonally from corner to corner with worsted weight yarn, the pattern features the easy, beginner stitch pattern known as Moss Stitch, or Linen Stitch. There are two optional edge trims suggested.
Tip for finding exactly where to insert your hook:
1) Other than working into the 3rd ch on the first row, you will never insert the hook into a stitch, but always into a chain-space.
2) If you’re having trouble seeing exactly where the ch-3sp is that you need to crochet into, place a stitch marker around the ch-3 as soon as you make it. This will show you exactly where to work the last (sc, ch 1, sc) group.
3) If you’re having trouble seeing where to insert the hook in the ch-1sp, rather than trying to “see” it with your eyes, pinch the work with your fingers and rub them back and forth to wiggle the chain-space open--this works for me every time.
This washcloth pattern was developed for the “Knit One, Crochet Too Charity Workshops” at Craftworks in Northboro, MA. This month’s featured charity was “Socks for Soldiers, Inc.” If you download this pattern, please make at least one washcloth for your favorite charity. If you want to make one or more for SFS, check out their Facebook group for details on their work, and note that fiber content must be either 100% cotton, or cotton blended with other natural plant fibers. There can be no synthetic fiber, as washcloths made of these don’t survive or work well in desert heat.
Size is really approximate, and gauge is not critical for this project. Use any weight yarn you wish with an appropriate sized hook, and keep crocheting until one side of your washcloth is the desired dimension, or until you’ve used up almost half your yarn, then proceed with the decrease rows. So long as the fabric is dense enough to hold together and soft enough to be pleasant to the skin, you’re good. As designed, the washcloth is approximately 9” x 9” when blocked.
