Diamas
The dramatically open work and exaggerated style of the long, wispy edging on this daring lace shawl is balanced with the textural constrast of that instantly recognizable stitch: the nupp. A defining feature of Estonian lace, the nupp provides a unique visual and tactile texture and, unable to be reproduced by machine knitting, signals not only the refined taste of the true lace connoisseur, but also the painstaking dedication of the devoted lace master.
Diamas is a generously-sized crescent shawl worked from the top edge. Garter short rows lead to garter diamonds and lace motifs, ending with elongated openwork points (CHART ONLY). Nupps can be replaced with beaded stitches or left off altogether and replaced with simple knit stitches.
January 30, 2023 - typo in the row numbers of Chart C:
Rows should be marked as 57, 59, 61, not 57, 58, 59 (only the right side rows are charted)
